31st Annual Stroke Course: The Motor Highway
-
Early bird rate $400 through February 27, 2025. After, $450.

DESCRIPTION
The brain uses trillions of neural connections to send and receive information. Following a stroke, a patient immediately begins to repair pathways and create new connections for continued function and recovery. This course aims to examine the complexity of our motor pathways, their impact on daily function and activity and their role in recovery from stroke.
This two-day course will travel down the highway of function for our motor pathways, the factor of neuroplasticity in recovery and what current outside interventions can aid with regaining motor function. The latest research and ongoing efforts in studying the mechanisms of neuroplasticity will be merged throughout the course in terms of brain repair and functional recovery after stroke. We will explore the role of motor learning principles in optimizing feedback, practice conditions, and cueing hierarchies. This approach will not only enhance interventions but also integrate an interdisciplinary perspective tailored to the patient’s current environment. Breakout sessions will take a detour towards apraxia and motor deficits and their impact on speech and swallowing, daily living and mobility. We will choose a direction as to whether our patients are ready to return to driving. And finally, let’s follow the map of motor recovery for prognosis and improved quality of life.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER

DATES & LOCATION
This course is offered virtually and will be held on May 1st and 2nd between the hours of 9 am & 4 pm Central US Time. We will use Zoom, an online meeting platform for the live sessions, and all learning materials will be shared in the Academy Learning Portal.
AUDIENCE
Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants and Speech-language Pathologists. Please see the section continuing education for accreditation details.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
To successfully complete this course, participants will need to attend the live activity, complete all self-study work, attest to your attendance and complete an evaluation at the conclusion of the course through the Academy Learning Portal. Self-study work will be available on April 1, 2025. All course work, including self-study work and online evaluation, must be completed by May 9, 2025. Learners will have access to the course materials for review until July 31, 2025.
SELF-STUDY WORK
Learners will choose one of three articles to read and complete a 5-question assessment to demonstrate knowledge of the material. Learners may choose to read more than one article but will only receive credit for one article, 1.0/0.1 contact hour/CEU. Self-study work will be available beginning April 1, 2025 and must be completed by May 9, 2025.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS
On day two, during the course, breakout rooms will open in Zoom and you will self-select your session that you wish to attend. Please review the descriptions in the brochure of each breakout session so you can make an informed selection.
LEARNER OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- List the components of the basic processing stream for the motor system
- Apply principles of neuroplasticity, motor learning and motor control to interdisciplinary goal setting and intervention
- Describe the principles and use of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) post-stroke
- Apply the foundation of task-specific training for task and environment variations for improved patient outcomes
- Define integrative treatment for speech, cognition and sensorimotor needs in rehabilitation
- Summarize the physical, cognitive and visual/perceptual deficits that factor in an individual’s ability to return to driving after a stroke
