Z 4/13-4/14: 46th Interdisciplinary Spinal Cord Injury/Disease Course: Low Tech, High Tech, What the Tech?
This course focuses on the use of technology, or the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes in individuals with a spinal cord injury. We seek to discuss the scientific principles, and application of these principles to change the environment in which humans with spinal cord injury live for the better. We will journey from the relevance of not only neuroimaging and the impact of technology on the assessment of spinal cord injury and the impact on some motor, sensory, and autonomic functions, but also motor-based functional electrical stimulation (FES) and neurological transcranial magnetic stimulation and their implications on recovery. The role of spasticity in its management and assessment will play a critical role in themes for this course. We will discuss technology and what aspects of high and low technological options are most applicable in certain scenarios, where high tech may be an option, but what to do as well if you don’t necessarily have the technology, but only the principles behind it. This spinal cord injury course will focus on current research in the field of spinal cord injury, specialized equipment and technology needs, secondary conditions due to spinal cord injury, and issues faced in not only acute care or inpatient rehabilitation but also outpatient facilities.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss issues surrounding high technology options such as functional electrical stimulation (FES), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or locomotor training equipment (Lokomat) in the rehabilitation of those with a spinal cord injury
- Explain the role of neuroimaging in determining prognosis for individuals with a spinal cord injury
- Identify specialized equipment needs, assistive technology, and treatment considerations appropriate for the spinal cord injured patient in the rehabilitation setting
- Explain low tech options for parenting, adjustment and caregiving issues related to spinal cord injury
- Discuss recreation, leisure, fitness and travel technological considerations for persons living with a spinal cord injury
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION: In order to receive contact hours, you must attend and participate on both live dates, submit attendance codes, and complete an on-line evaluation of the program. In order to receive credit, all course requirements must be completed by April 28, 2023.
You are required to select 1 of 3 workshops to attended on Day 1. (More information can be found after the agenda). This choice will be completed when you register. Please note, there is a cap on workshops, therefore it is a first come first serve basis on your selection.
If you select the workshop: Upper Extremity Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and High Repetition Task Training in Spinal Cord Injury, there is optional pre-work “Functional Electrical Stimulation in Upper Extremity SCI” to provide foundational knowledge of the research supporting this practice. Each learner has access to this optional course in their learning path. Successful completion of the FES course will provide 1.0 contact hours for OT and PT. NOTE: If selecting this workshop, it is strongly recommended that you have your own FES unit available.
If you select the workshop: Seating and Mobility Considerations with Low-Tech and High-Tech Options for Optimal Outcomes, there is optional pre-work “Seating and Mobility Considerations for Patients with SCI” to provide foundational knowledge supporting this practice. Each learner has access to this optional course in their learning path. Successful completion of the FES course will provide 1.0 contact hours for OT and PT.
You are required to select 2 of 4 group discussions to attend on Day 1. This choice will be completed when you register. Please note, there is a cap on group discussions, therefore it is a first come first serve basis on your selection.
