At the National Association of Hispanic Nurses–Illinois (NAHN-Illinois) Inaugural Scholarship and Award Gala on Friday, Oct. 17, Irene Mendez, a registered nurse in the Medically Advanced Care Unit, received the 2018 Outstanding Service Award and Luis Espinosa, patient care technician on the 22nd Floor Spinal Cord Innovation Center, won a nursing scholarship.
Irene was recognized for her broad contributions to nursing. She has served as NAHN-Illinois’ secretary, oversaw the group’s Recruitment and Retention Committee, and is the organization’s ambassador to the American Heart Association. She was recognized with the Illinois Nurses Foundation’s “40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders” and NAHN’s “40 Under 40 Award.”
Luis was selected to receive the NAHN-Illinois scholarship award for his academic excellence (he is currently a student at Malcolm X College) and his commitment to making a difference as a bilingual nurse.
