Body
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin
- People with a disability who drive or are driven in a private car may apply for a card or license plate that allows parking in specially designated accessible spaces.
- Each state has an application process in which the appropriate form must be signed and completed by both a physician and the applicant. Forms are then typically submitted to the Secretary of State office.
- NOTE: If a person, other than the patient takes the parking placard application to the State office they MUST bring a power of attorney form with them signed by the patient in order to obtain the placard. If they mail it in, this is not needed.
Advocacy Tip for Accessible Parking
- All facilities that offer parking for employees or visitors must provide adequate accessible parking for people with disabilities. The accessible parking space and nearby striped access space must be clear of obstructions at all times. All accessible spaces should be situated on level pavement.
- Complaints about inaccessibility or improperly marked spaces should be addressed to the Disability Rights Bureau of the Attorney General's Office.
