Taking care of yourself includes taking care of the mobility aids that support your lifestyle. This involves cleaning your device and having good hand hygiene for viral infection prevention.
Body
There are many parts to a wheelchair that will need cleaning, when considering contact with care workers, or a new person comes in contact with you and your wheelchair or mobility aide. Some people will need assistance to clean areas they are unable to do themselves such as:
- joysticks
- arm rests
- head controls
- mouth controls
- cushions
- back of the wheelchair
- push handles
- hand rims
- wheels
Some of the highest touch areas of a wheelchair are the hand rims and the seat cushions.
In times of high virus spread such as COVID-19, attention to keeping a clean wheelchair and clean hands will greatly reduce the likelihood of transferring the virus from the wheels to your hands and body.
